AC repair: common questions
How do I know if I need a repair or just gas?
The pressure readings tell. Low pressure on both sides with a compressor that runs points to low gas. A full charge with no cooling points to the compressor, expansion valve or a blend door. No air at all is the blower, not the gas. The inspection settles it before any part is ordered.
Why does the receiver drier get replaced with the compressor?
The drier holds a desiccant that absorbs moisture, and it is saturated once the system has been open to humid air. A failed compressor can also send metal particles through the lines. Fitting a new compressor without a new drier and a flush risks losing the new part.
Can I drive with the AC not working?
Usually yes, with the AC switched off. The exception is a seized compressor. On many cars it shares the drive belt with the alternator and water pump, so a seized pulley can snap the belt. If you hear grinding or smell burning rubber, stop and call.
