Car towing service: common questions
My car is in a basement and will not start. How does it get out?
First the technician tries a jump start, because a running car can simply be driven up the ramp. If it will not run, it is put in neutral and brought up to street level with equipment that fits under the height limit, then loaded onto the flatbed.
Can an automatic or all-wheel-drive car be towed with two wheels on the ground?
It should not be. Turning the driven wheels with the engine off can damage an automatic gearbox, and on an all-wheel-drive car it can damage the centre differential or transfer case. A flatbed carries the whole car, which is why it is used for these.
Do I need to be with the car?
Someone has to hand over the key and, in a tower, the parking access card. You can leave both with building security or the concierge if you tell us in advance. Remove valuables, and take photos of the car before it is loaded.
