About the GV80's battery
On the GV80 the battery is in the luggage area under the floor, to the side of the spare wheel well. With rear climate, powered seats and a large screen, it is a heavy user of 12V power on short trips.
SUVs and 4x4s carry more electrical load than a saloon: bigger AC systems, rear climate, powered tailgates and often a towing or off-road package. They take a larger-capacity battery, and a tired one shows up first as a slow crank after the car has been parked in the sun.
What to expect by model year
- From about 2017 onwards, a battery sensor on the negative terminal is common. On many cars the new battery has to be registered so the charging system treats it correctly.
- On cars still under manufacturer warranty, keep the invoice. A like-for-like battery of the correct specification, properly registered, is what the handbook asks for.
What applies to every Genesis
Genesis puts the 12V battery in the boot on its saloons and on the GV80, under the floor panel beside the spare wheel well. That keeps it away from engine heat, which helps in Dubai, but it means the boot has to be emptied before work starts. The cars use AGM batteries from the factory. Swapping one for a conventional flooded battery is a false economy on a car with this much electronic equipment.
A battery sensor on the negative terminal tells the car how much charge is available. After a change, the sensor recalibrates on its own once the car has been left locked for a few hours, so start-stop and some comfort features may take a day to return. If the battery is completely flat, the electric boot release will not work. The technician feeds power through the jump terminal under the bonnet, opens the boot, and carries on from there.

How long does it take to change a Genesis GV80 battery?
About 20 to 30 minutes once the technician is at the car. Add a few minutes if the battery sits in the boot or under a seat, or if the new one has to be registered to the car.
Will I lose my radio and seat settings?
No. We connect a memory saver before disconnecting the old battery, so the clock, radio presets, windows and seat memory stay as they are.
Can you fit the battery in my tower's basement parking?

Where is the battery on a Genesis G70?
In the boot, under the floor panel. Lift the carpet and the cover beneath it. There is a jump-start terminal under the bonnet for boosting, so you do not need to reach the battery itself to get the car going.
Start-stop has not worked since my Genesis got a new battery. Is something wrong?
Usually not. The battery sensor needs time to learn the new battery. Leave the car locked and undisturbed for at least four hours, then drive normally for a day or two. If start-stop is still off after that, the battery type or the sensor connection should be checked.
