About the Model S's battery
Earlier Model S cars use a 12V AGM battery reached by removing trim in the front boot, which takes time. Refreshed cars from 2021 moved to a lithium low-voltage battery. The technician confirms which is fitted before starting.
Compact cars have small engine bays and small batteries, so there is less reserve. A week parked with a dashcam running can be enough to flatten one. Getting the exact case size right matters because the tray has no spare room.
What to expect by model year
- From roughly 2010 to 2016, start-stop arrived on many models. If yours has it, the battery will be EFB or AGM and should be replaced with the same type.
- From about 2017 onwards, a battery sensor on the negative terminal is common. On many cars the new battery has to be registered so the charging system treats it correctly.
- On cars still under manufacturer warranty, keep the invoice. A like-for-like battery of the correct specification, properly registered, is what the handbook asks for.
What applies to every Tesla
Every Tesla needs its low-voltage battery to unlock the doors, wake the screens and close the contactors that connect the main pack. When it fails, the car looks completely dead even with a full traction battery. Cars built until around late 2021 use a 12V lead-acid unit, an AGM type on Model S and Model X and a compact maintenance-free one on Model 3 and Model Y. It sits beneath trim panels in the front boot area.
Later cars switched to a lithium low-voltage battery of about 16V, and the Cybertruck runs a 48V system. Those are Tesla parts fitted by Tesla service, and this service does not replace them. What can be done at the car is a test, a like-for-like 12V replacement on older models, and an external 12V supply to wake a car with a flat low-voltage battery. The traction pack itself cannot be jump started. An empty pack means recovery to a charger.

How long does it take to change a Tesla Model S battery?
About 20 to 30 minutes once the technician is at the car. Add a few minutes if the battery sits in the boot or under a seat, or if the new one has to be registered to the car.
Will I lose my radio and seat settings?
No. We connect a memory saver before disconnecting the old battery, so the clock, radio presets, windows and seat memory stay as they are.
Can you fit the battery in my tower's basement parking?

Can you jump start a Tesla in JBR?

Do you replace the lithium low-voltage battery on newer Tesla models?
