About the XC60's battery
Recent XC60 models follow the same layout: starter battery in the luggage area, and a small support battery in the engine bay on cars without the mild-hybrid system. A start-stop fault message often traces back to the support battery.

What to expect by model year
- Model years up to about 2009 almost always use a standard flooded or calcium battery with no electronics to reset. Changing it is straightforward.
- From roughly 2010 to 2016, start-stop arrived on many models. If yours has it, the battery will be EFB or AGM and should be replaced with the same type.
- From about 2017 onwards, a battery sensor on the negative terminal is common. On many cars the new battery has to be registered so the charging system treats it correctly.
- On cars still under manufacturer warranty, keep the invoice. A like-for-like battery of the correct specification, properly registered, is what the handbook asks for.
What applies to every Volvo
Most Volvos built in the last decade use an AGM main battery, because start-stop and the car's many control units draw heavily on it. On the XC90, XC60, S90 and other larger models the main battery sits in the boot under the floor, not under the bonnet. Cars with start-stop but no mild-hybrid system also carry a small 12V support battery in the engine bay. When that one fails, start-stop stops working and a battery message appears.
A Volvo watches its battery through a sensor on the negative terminal. After a new battery goes in, the monitoring system should be reset with a diagnostic tool so the car charges it as a new battery and not as the tired one it replaced. A memory saver keeps the settings alive during the change. Mild-hybrid B4, B5 and B6 models have a 48V battery too. That part is dealer work. The 12V battery is not.

How long does it take to change a Volvo XC60 battery?
About 20 to 30 minutes once the technician is at the car. Add a few minutes if the battery sits in the boot or under a seat, or if the new one has to be registered to the car.
Will I lose my radio and seat settings?

Why has start-stop stopped working on my Volvo?
The usual cause is a weak battery. The car turns start-stop off to protect itself when the main battery or the small support battery is low. A test on both shows which one has faded. Replacing the right one and resetting the battery monitor normally brings it back.
Does a mild-hybrid Volvo still have a normal 12V battery?
Yes. B4, B5 and B6 mild hybrids have a 48V battery for the starter-generator and a separate 12V battery for everything else. The 12V battery can be tested and replaced where the car is parked. The 48V battery is a dealer item and not something a mobile service changes.
